About Visayan Legacy Association

Visayan Legacy Eskrima and the Visayan Legacy Association were created in 2007 as the vision of Master Sonny Napial and his brother, the late Master Joe Napial, with the tenets of Honesty, Integrity, and Loyalty. As the non-profit arm of the organization, the Visayan Legacy Association (VLA) strives to foster awareness, appreciation, and growth in the Filipino Martial Arts and the Filipino Culture through training, competitions, seminars, and demonstrations.

MASTER SONNY NAPIAL

Founder of Visayan Legacy, Master Sonny or CHIEF to his Students has been practicing Martial Arts for over 5 decades from different styles such as Kung Ku, Kenpo, Kajukembo, Filipino Kali Academy, JKD and Bandalan Doce Pares where he was Chief Instructor till about 2007 and founded Visayan Legacy Association.
Now Master Sonny is a full time instructor of Visayan Legacy residing in Long Beach, CA and President of Global Stick and Blade Alliance USA.

GURO JOHN A. GARCIA

My philosophy towards life is Honesty, Humility, Loyalty, Kindness, and Respect towards other. I believe in giving everything 100% and never giving up. Be gracious in defeat and humble in victory. Treat other with the respect and dignity that you would expect in return. Hard work and dedication will get you far in this world, be giver and not a taker, and kindness is it own reward. Lastly, look not at the color of a man skin, but as the character that he carries inside.

GURO HENRY CABILLON

My philosophy in life as in martial arts is all about the self-discipline that drives the body, mind, and spirit. As a martial arts practitioner, I believe that a people must be able to empty their cups before they can truly learn anything, and in doing so, can immerse themselves in the arts with an open mind. I place an emphasis on the respect, diligence, competitive spirit, and pride that the arts evokes from a practitioner. The focus should be on learning, sharing, and the propagation of the arts.

GURO ARIEL GONZALES

Inherent in the teaching of martial arts are the guiding principles of respect, determination, courtesy, and self awareness. A martial artists must view his art, not just as sport, but as way of life.

GURO DALE DE LOS REYES

Martial Arts is about give and take. The more you give into the art, the more you take out of it. I approach instruction in the same way. I give it my all so my students can take the most out of this beautiful art.

We all strive for 100% perfection, although no one can truly attain it. Otherwise, you stop training, learning, growing. We are all students, teachers, learners. You teach best what you most need to learn.

GURO MILO CUDANES

I pride myself for being a forever student. I'm indebted to my many past Instructors for the knowledge that has been entrusted to me. My journey to be a well rounded Student has led me to VLA, in Weapons Training. As an Instructor, my philosophy is always the experience of the Student. I choose to focus on the Students' retention of knowledge over physical strength alone. I have valued my journey in the Martial Arts, and promise to pass that same sentiments onto my Students. I have constantly said that anyone can learn to punch and kick, but not anyone can retain the lessons, techniques, and wisdom that have been bestowed from their Instructors.
